Figured I would post some incremental steps of my sketch process. I had this idea of sister birds in my head for a few days and needed to get it on paper!
1. Quick thumbnail in blue pencil (my staple), blocking out general composition and the blocks of the characters. I wanted two symmetrical characters, so I focused on nailing one with the intention of flipping it in Photoshop. Thumbnail is about 3”x4”
2. Scanned in thumbnail with flipped sister. I erased part of her head in order to create blank space for a separate hairstyle.
3. Printed out a larger version of the thumbnail and tightened up everything. Added hair to the second sister and created subtle differences between the two in their eyebrows and feathers. Went over everything in 0.7 mechanical pencil.
4. Scanned drawing, blown up and blown out. I bumped up the contrast as much as possible to isolate the dark lines. At this stage, I keep the blue lines, as desaturating everything muddies the black lines. I’ll need these to transfer the piece onto a board to paint.
And those are my steps so far! Stay tuned for the finished painting. I’m planning this one at at least a 16”x20” painting in acryla gouache.
